Scooting In Dogs – Popular Symptoms And Its Diagnosis
What is scooting? It is an anal sac disease which can be caused due to many reasons, one being parasites. Let us first understand what exactly scooting is. Scooting occurs when the anus drags in an extended state with the hind limbs. In animals such as dogs, parasites can lead to such an action by irritating the anus regions.
But it is wrong to assume that parasites alone cause scooting in dogs. Many a times, dogs suffer from scooting without any evidence towards it being caused due to parasites. This can be due to anal tumors, injuries close to the anal region or anal gland infections which are valid reasons leading to the dragging of the anus region in dogs.
Irritation around the anus region can also be caused due to fleabites, where the dog can try to bite the region around the anus leading to the dragging of this region on to the ground. Tapeworms cause a condition called cestodiasis in dogs.
In these situations, proper and timely treatment must be given to the dog or the animal will most probably exhibit scooting activities. Crawling activities near the anus can be caused due to the passing of tapeworm segments in the stool.
Severe itching in these regions can be caused due to these crawling activities of tapeworm segments. Consequently, to relieve the constant irritation, the dog begins t press the anus region, first on the ground and then drags it on the ground with the extension of the rear limbs.
On examining the fecal sample, one can usually find a packet of eggs. But due to flotation, these packets might burst and therefore, diagnosis of this is often very difficult. Tapeworm segments look like rice pieces and scooting dogs should be first examined to rule this out.
The tapeworm segments are the color of white and they turn yellow on being taken from the body. Tapeworms can even be spotted below the tail near the anus, or they may be located in the motion. For specific cures, consult your veterinarian.
