I’m an eco-concious person, and like to recycle as much as I can. I do not have a dog or anything, but I’ve been picking up and saving those little bags around in parks for quite some time. I empty and rinse them but then just cant think of any good ways to reuse them. Can you?

He went on to say that; “dog poop and dog waste is something that Hotels, RV Parks, Condo’s and apartments Complexes that take dogs have to deal with on a daily bases. If you make the price of the Dog Poop Bag Dispenser to high in this economy nobody would buy.”

Dog clothes – Is your dog stylin’?

Most dogs are born with a natural “coat,” although there are some hairless breeds such as the American hairless terrier, the hairless Chinese crested, the hairless khala, the Peruvian Inca orchid and the xoloitzcuintli. The history of placing human clothing on dogs is said to have begun during the reign of King Arthur around 520 A.D., when the dogs that were used as part of the military wore clothing to protect them from the elements and from attack.

Today, dogs used by police departments may wear clothing for protection, including bullet-proof vests, and service dogs wear special vests to let people know they’re doing their jobs and for better visibility.

For the most part, however, pet owners like to dress their dogs up to make them look cute, although some dogs, including the smaller breeds, such as chihuahuas, mini schnauzers, toy poodles and other toy breeds, require dog clothes to keep them warm in cold weather.

Dog clothes and accessories are many and include dog shoes and socks, T-shirts, dresses, shorts, pants, swimwear, diapers, costumes, dog sweaters, jackets, hats and jewelry. There are even breed-specific dog clothes such as bulldog hoodies.

Dog clothes come in a variety of sizes, styles and price ranges. You can usually find clothes for your tiny chihuahua or for your lab. Most dog clothes are suited to the small to medium breeds but there are some clothes made large enough for the larger breeds.

There are even eco-friendly dog sweaters that are manufactured from “scraps” of cotton that are too small to do anything with and would otherwise end up in an incinerator but are made into very stylish and colorful sweaters, thus saving the earth from more chemicals and saving water because they don’t have to grow or dye any more cotton.

Relatively new is an eco-friendly dog jacket that’s made from 100% recycled polyester fabric that is recyclable again after your dog either outgrows it or wears it out. It has reflective flares on the back of the jacket to keep your dog visible on dark rainy days or at nighttime.

Some dogs apparently like to dress up for Halloween as there are many dog costumes available. If your dog wants to be a clown, a football player, a skeleton, a pumpkin, a fairy, a penguin, a flower, a bumblebee, a cop or a dinosaur, you can find a costume for him this Halloween.

Don’t forget to keep his feet warm with socks and shoes. You can find a variety of sock styles and colors and also a variety of shoes, including sandals, boots, sneakers and moccasins.

Dog hats can include top hats, cowboy hats, bucket hats, Santa hats and elf hats.

If you’re looking for a collar for your dog, there are numerous styles to choose from, whether you like plain leather or something fancier with spikes, flowers, glitter, snake print, ribbon, bandanna style or light-up. They, too, come in a wide price range. Most pet owners consider dog collars as a necessity, even if they don’t dress their dogs in clothes. Collars are essential if you want your dog to carry identification. Some dogs wear necklaces, tiaras, bows, hairpins and charms.

Dog clothes have come a long way since King Arthur’s days, from being necessary for protection to sometimes being necessary for warmth but more often making a fashion statement. What does your dog’s wardrobe look like?

What is Parvo

Parvo virus was first identified in 1978 and within two years\’ it had spread all over the world. Over the years, the parvo virus has mutated into two different strains and there is evidence of a third strain present in Italy, Spain and Vietnam. Every case of canine parvo virus, or CPV, comes from the first two strains. Every different species has its own parvo virus and it cannot be spread outside of the species, so there is a human parvo virus, a canine parvo virus, a feline parvo virus, and so on.

Even though the virus cannot be spread from a cat to a dog or from a bird to a cat, they can spread the virus through contact. For instance, your cat wanders through the neighbor\’s yard and picks up the virus on her feet she can then bring it into your home potentially infecting any canines on the property.

The parvo virus works in two ways either through the intestines or through the heart. When a dog gets an intestinal infection, it is picked up by the animal through oral contact with contaminated feces. Simply put, your dog would have to come into contaminated feces from another dog. The intestinal dog parvo symptoms occur when the virus attacks the bone marrow, rapidly dividing cells in the intestinal crypts and the lymph nodes. This allows normally occurring bacteria from the intestines to enter the blood stream to make the animal septic. The virus can be shed in the stool for up to three weeks thus making this a very contagious disease for pets that have not been inoculated.

The cardio form of the infection is most often seen in puppies that are infected in utero or shortly after birth. It must be noted that the cardiac form of CPV is less common since the mother usually passes immunity on to her pups from birth. The virus will attack the heart in the infected pup and result in death shortly thereafter.

Dog parvo symptoms usually present themselves within 3 to 10 days of contact. They include the following: lethargy, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. The diarrhea can cause severe dehydration and secondary infections. The dog will not usually die from the virus but from a secondary infection.

The survival rate depends upon how swiftly parvo virus is diagnosed and treatment is begun. If the virus is not caught early on, the usual treatment is given through an IV line in which fluids are pushed to re-hydrate the puppy or dog more quickly. In addition to giving fluids, anti-nausea and antibiotic shots may be given intramuscularly. Given the proper care, the prognosis is good, but if care is withheld your dog will die prematurely. Most vets will strongly suggest that your pet be vaccinated against parvo about eight weeks after a puppy is weaned.

Dog Health and the Cost of Pet Care

Health care for dogs is not inexpensive. Yearly pysical exams, blood tests, vaccines, antiparasitics, and good food can cost a lot of money. However, preventative medicine is always cheaper than treating a disease Overall health care costs for your dog will be reduced if you invest in preventative health measures.

For example, a year of heartworm preventative for a small dog can cost on average dollars, but treatments for heartworm can cost up to 0 dollars. It is always cheaper to avoid a disease than to treat it, and of course your dog will have the best chance for a long life if it lives a healthy lifestyle.

While the cost of health care for dogs has increased, there are now many different types of dog health insurance plans available.

Talk with your veterinarian about insurance plans. You should also check Internet websites for health plans that may work for you and your dog. Health insurance for animals is becoming a more popular choice for pet owners as these plans are becoming more comprehensive and cost effective. Take the time to research these plans, and you may find a plan that will save you money and help you to care for your dog.

Prevention And Early Diagnosis

Prevention and early diagnosis are the two factors your dog the best chance for a long, healthy life. Always pay attention to your dog’s behavior, and never take a ‘wait and see’ approach. If you feel that there may be something rong with your dog, take it to a veterinarian immediately.

Take precautions to keep your dog safe in and around your home as well. Owning a dog is a lot like having small children as they like to explore, taste, smell and touch whatever they can get their paws on. ‘Doggy proof’ your home by keeping poisonous products out of reach. Always store medications far out of reach, Pay particular attention to pills that are left on a counter, in a purse, or in an accessible drawer. These are some of the more frequently reported incidences of dog overdoses).

The Dangers Of Poor Dog Health

While many of the dangers to your dog’s health discussed in this article are not always lethal, they can cause damage to your dog’s body that will harm your dog’s chances of living a long life. One infection may not harm your dog. But repeated infections combined with such things as parasitic infections or poor nutrition can add up to damage over time.

Try to take all measures possible to keep your dog healthy from the very start. Good nutrition, owner vigilance, and parasite control will help keep your dog strong and healthy for years to come.

A Long And Healthy Life

As a dog ages, it is important to provide the problems that come with increased age. It is not enough for most owners that their dog live a long life. They want it to be healthy and happy as well. if you want your dog to lead a long and healthy life, you will need to increase its veterinary care and yearly screenings. Pay particular attention your senior dog’s diet needs and watch for any changes in behavior.

Support your aging dog with pain control medications and adjust its surroundings so that i will be more comfortable. For example, put extra padding on the bed, and use a higher doggy dish to avoid neck pain in case yur dog has arthritis. You might also get a sturdy, movable ramp that will help your senior dog get up short flights of stairs or climb into the car.

Preserving The Show Dog Shih Tzu’s Coat

The Shih Tzu’s coat for the show rings requires extra care. Some show people actually keep their Shih Tzu confined and caged to preserve the coat, or they wrap the coat or oil it. Those who do keep their show Shih Tzu confined and caged pay a price in loss of muscle tone in their dogs. Not all show people practice these methods for preserving their Shih Tzu’s long show dog coats. It is also a myth that all show people do not allow their show Shih Tzu to go for long walks, to play and just in general to lead a normal life. For those who do allow their show Shih Tzu do lead a normal life keeping the coat glamorous requires a lot of extra effort, and much more grooming than for the pet Shih Tzu.

Coconut oil is considered helpful as a means of preserving the coat of a show dog Shih Tzu. If you do oil the show dog Shih Tzu coat you must remove the oil completely before each show. If you do not remove all the oil the coat appear limp and feel wrong. It can also be uncomfortable to be around a Shih Tzu that has been oiled. There are good oils on the market, however, that do not have this effect on the coat and it may be worth trying them if the Shih Tzu’s coat seems to need it. Wrapping the coat in tissue paper protects the Shih Tzu’s coat, but you lose some of the pleasure of seeing your dog in full coat with his hair flowing as he moves. I do think this is a beautiful, beautiful sight of the show dog Shih Tzu. The tissue wrapping sort of reminds me of the days when women ran around the house for house with their hair in curlers.

Probably the best thing to do if you are just starting out taking care of your Shih Tzu show dog’s coat is to experiment with different methods of preserving the coat until you find what works best for your dog. Much the same type of procedures a pet owner must go through, although a lot more intense and time consuming as the Shih Tzu show do requires so much more in the way of grooming.

One thing is for certain if you start out with “bad hair” it is virtually impossible to make it good enough for the show ring. When purchasing your show potential Shih Tzu it is wise to study the lines to find out which have good hair in their genes. This way you can just continue to keep it looking good.

The topknot and whiskers also need very special attention on the show dog Shih Tzu. The white whiskers on a parti-coloured Shih Tzu must be really, really white to look good. It seems this is especially true for the black and white Shih Tzu.

Some older methods of keeping the whiskers white was to wash them at least once a day with a solution of boracic powder, a teaspoon to a pint of water. This mixture is wiped into the whiskers, being careful to get none in the eyes and then rinsed away. One of the keys to keeping whiskers white is above all to dry them immediately and keep them dry. An older method of drying them was to work in some fuller’s earth or talcum powder, brushing this out and repeating until the hair was absolutely dry. If you allow the Shih Tzu to dry his own whiskers he will rub and rub until dry doing nothing but harm to the length of the coat. Another problem you run into with all this washing is that the hair becomes dry and brittle. You will need to dress the whiskers with a little coat conditioner from time to time.

A method of preserving the hair of the topknot is to use several bands along the length of the hair to hold it to the back of the head. You can also plait the hair to achieve the same purpose. Use neither of these methods just before a show as both methods will cause kinks in the coat of which you do not want.

It is always wise to review the rules of the American Kennel Club about the use of oils and conditioners on the coat of a show dog. Any substance used to alter the natural color, texture or body of the coat is usually prohibited.

There are a lot of things that you will need to do when going through a dog adoption. You’ll find that the minute that you fill out the application, you’ll have to take steps in order to make the transition a smooth project. First, you should keep in mind that not only should you get involved in the process, but also the whole family needs to get involved. If this is a family pet, then the family needs to go to the shelter and spend some time playing with the dog. You’ll also find that if you take some extra time in the beginning when it comes to bonding with the dog, as a family, then you’ll be able to build a lasting-bond, but also you’ll be able to start off on the right foot.

When it comes to bringing the dog home, you’ll first want to talk to everyone about how it is quiet time. If you scream or if you say anything above a normal talking voice, you will be making the dog uncomfortable and you’ll place the bonding on the back burner, because it will not trust anyone.

Then you will need to get your pet into a routine too. You’ll need to start the first day. Take the dog outside everyday at five and eight. Feed the dog everyday at 8am. These are things that will comfort the dog and they will also begin to realize that there is stability in the home for them. If you forget about a part of the routine, then you need to correct it right away. You’ll find that the schedule will not only make the dog feel better, but it will also make the family bond together and it’ll be a healthy strength for the relationship.

Keep in mind that the dog is now a part of the family. It’s not just a dog, but also an extension of the family. You’ll want to have a plan for the dog when it comes to the times where it is left alone. Keep in mind that this new dog is a responsibility to everyone. You’ll want to make sure that everyone takes the responsibility needed to keep the pet healthy and growing.

It is also a good idea to have the whole family get involved with the actual duties that it takes to keep a dog healthy and safe. You’ll find that not only is it good for the children to get involved, but it will teach them how to become a responsible young adult. There are life lessons to be learned when you take the time to bond as a family with the dog that you just adopted. It is so important that you take the time to get use to the dog as part of the family.

How to Treat Arthritis in Dogs and Hip Dysplasia in Dogs

Anywhere a dog has a joint they can have arthritis. The cartilage in the joint may be inflamed, but it can also be joint fluid causing the issues within the bones. The main types of arthritis in dogs are osteoarthritis, immune mediated, infective, and idiopathic.

The most common dog arthritis is osteoarthritis which is a degenerative disease in the joints where the cartilage will need remodeling, and then the new bone causes the arthritis. The dog arthritis symptoms are usually a gradual onset of limpness in the limbs. In other words lameness will result to where the dog finds it difficult to walk. Most often a dog will also be less likely to be active such as walks, playing, or even going up stairs.

Dog arthritis begins as a gradual limpness in the affected limb or limbs and may progress to lameness. An advanced case will reveal itself as a dog that is less active in play, on walks and generally has difficulty walking. The stiffness and pain are more likely to be pronounced in the morning or after a nap – when the dog has been sleeping in the same position for some time. During the day when the dog is most active, the pain is generally minimal.

A dog afflicted with arthritis will tend to feel pain if their limbs are touched near to where the joint is inflamed. There is usually swelling as well, but this will not normally be visible to the naked eye.

Arthritis medicine is available for dogs who suffer from the condition – this can treat the inflammation. Many dog owners instead opt for more natural methods of treatment for their pet, finding them more helpful in many cases. Glucosamine and MSM are two popular natural dog arthritis treatments (they are also used in humans with arthritis). A lot of experts in the field think that arthritis is best treated by a combination of MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

Depending on the cause of the arthritis in dogs you may need to have medication for your pet. Some types of arthritis can be taken care of with a healthy diet and exercise. Obesity in dogs is one cause of arthritis. By helping the dog to maintain a natural weight for their size and eating a healthy diet you can eliminate the pain of arthritis. The joints may still experience some lasting effects; however this is minimal damage that can be treated with more glucosamine in the diet as well as other herbs.

Many times, just a change in diet can be enough to treat the symptoms of arthritis in dogs. Especially in tandem with exercise, diet can relieve arthritis in many dogs. Just as in humans, obesity can lead to arthritis. If the animal is kept at a healthy weight, then much of the pain of arthritis will simply disappear.

For some dogs, arthritis remedies must be used in conjunction with a change in the animal\’s diet to best treat the symptoms of dog arthritis.

Obedience Training of Older Dog May Require Minor Tweaks in Procedure

Obedience training can be done no matter what the age of the dog is. However, aged dogs must be handled carefully. Training is not only physically but also mentally demanding. Differentiate between the aged and the seriously infirm dogs when training them. As a norm, the training process of dogs requires a lot of patience. However, training aged dogs requires an even more patient and calm approach.

As such, the training procedure is not affected by the age of the dog. Irrespective of whether the dog is young or old, the training techniques remain the same. However, you may have to modify certain aspects of your training to accommodate the less than perfect eyesight and hearing abilities of the dog. Your hand signals should be distinct and your verbal commands should be extra clear. These minor changes should be made to the training process. However, just because an aged dog is being trained does not mean that the training need not be perfect. If necessary, extend the training period by a week but do not leave the dog half trained.

One area where persons training aged dogs must be very patient is the reaction time of the dog. Many a times, the trainer feels that the dog is purposely reacting in a slow manner. If the dog is aged, the slow reactions may be due to the overall slowing down of the movement of the dog. The dog may suffer from arthritis and this may hamper the movement. Be flexible while training the dog. If the dog finds it difficult to sit, then simply dispense with the ‘sit’ command. The dog will resist training if it causes pain to him. If there is no pain, then you can train the dog to not only sit but also to sit and stay.

If your dog finds it difficult to walk or find it difficult to get up after being ordered to lie down, try training the dog for a longer period of time on a soft surface. This will reduce the discomfort of the dog. Most dogs take a bit of time to get up after a ‘down and stay’ command. Give your dog that extra second after you command the dog to heel.

Other important points:

? Older dogs do develop cataracts. However, this condition can be found in young dogs as well.

? Despite what self appointed experts tell you, there is no evidence of mixed breeds living longer than pure breed dogs.

? If you have an older dog, watch out for hookworms as they are found more in aged dogs than young dogs. However, the susceptibility of the dog depends on the well being of the dog.

? Organ transplants are being performed on an experimental basis. However, they are very expensive operations.

? Generally older dogs shed less than younger dogs.

Notable, too, is that humans are at risk of rabies, ringworms, sarcoptic mange and ticks as these can be communicated to humans from dogs. Ringworm is a fungus and not a disease although it is popularly termed as a disease.

Important Symptoms You Should Never Ignore in Your Dog

Is your dog sick? What are your dog’s symptoms? We all know that your dog can’t tell you if it feels bad (at least not in so many words), so it’s your responsibility to take care of your dog and to understand when your dog is feeling bad.

Just how do you do that? Well, the best thing I can suggest to you is to know exactly how your dog feels when it is not sick. If you know this, and you know it well, you will be able to tell the difference when your dog is really sick without anyone else having to tell you otherwise.

When your dog feels bad he will probably exhibit some sort of symptom that should communicate to you, if you’re really paying attention, that he does not feel well.

What is a symptom? Well, to be precise, a symptom is often defined as “a physical sign that a disease or sickness is present”. Knowing exactly what kind of symptoms your dog has can usually guide your veterinarian toward diagnosing your pet illness.

Here are just a few of the more common symptoms your dog may exhibit if it is injured or feels “under the weather”, including: vomiting, diarrhea, going off it’s food, stumbling, seizing, drooling or limping.

The ability of recognizing your dogs symptoms and knowing when they need to be treated professionally is very important. This is a skill that everyone does not have but learning it can be the difference between life and death in many instances. The best thing I can tell you is to watch carefully. If your dog exhibits any thing out of the ordinary, and if that symptom continues or worsens over time, then it could very well become a problem.

Certain symptoms, such as seizures, breathing problems, or any kind of collapse should prompt you to get your dog a veterinary exam immediately. If there is ever any kind of doubt about the seriousness of any symptom then please contact your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency facility immediately and ask. Don’t wait to see if it’ll go away on it’s own. Explain the symptoms to the pet professional and ask for their advice. It is always better to be safe than sorry if you’re not sure whether or not your dog is in serious trouble.

There are all sorts of serious symptoms that should never be ignored in your dog. Potentially any of these symptoms could easily indicate an underlying disease and might even be your first clue to the presence of a life-threatening conditioning in your dog. You never know. So, here are a few symptoms that should never be ignored if you see them in your own dog!

Seizure. A seizure is often a symptom of some sort of neurological disorder. They can be caused by several things including epilepsy, toxins or tumors. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

Collapse or Fainting. Any reasons for collapse or fainting should always be considered serious and should not be ignored. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

Breathing Problems. Respiratory distress, labored or difficult breathing or even shortness of breath are all very serious symptoms and should be taken care of immediately.

Bloated or Distended Abdomen. Abdominal distension is an abnormal enlargement of the abdominal cavity and can often be a symptom of potentially life-threatening disease. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

Unproductive Vomiting. Dogs that attempt to vomit over and over and are never able to bring anything up is very serious. You should call your veterinarian immediately.

Trouble Urinating. This can range from: straining to urinate, frequently attempting to urinate, or even great discomfort when urinating. This can be very serious. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

Bruising and/or Bleeding. This should be evaluated immediately by your veterinarian.

Not Eating or Loss of Appetite. This is often the first indication of illness in your dog. This should be evaluated immediately by your veterinarian.

Pacing and Restlessness. In dogs, pacing and/or restlessness can usually be indicative of pain, discomfort or distress in your dog. In many cases it an indicator of a serious problem. This should be evaluated immediately by your veterinarian.

Losing Weight. There are several causes for this, if you’re not actually trying to help your dog lose extra pounds – some of which can be very serious. This should be evaluated immediately by your veterinarian.

Urinating and Drinking Excessively. Either of these are often the early signs of several diseases such as: kidney failure, diabetes, thyroid problems, uterine infections, etc. If you think that your dog is drinking excessively, make an appointment with your veterinarian immediately.

Fever. The normal temperature in dogs is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If your dogs temperature is higher, call your veterinarian asap.

Excessive coughing. Don’t think that this is no big deal. Coughing is a common protective reflex to clear the throat, etc. It can also affect the respiratory system if the coughing is excessive. Common causes of excessive coughing can be quite severe, such as: an obstruction in the windpipe, heartworm disease, bronchitis, pneumonia, lung tumors, kennel cough or even heart failure. This should be evaluated immediately by your veterinarian.

Bloody Diarrhea – Bloody Urine – Bloody Vomit. Any of these should be evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Some may be the result of minor ailments, while others could be severe or even life threatening. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

While the list of dog symptoms above is not at all all-inclusive, it is meant to be merely a resource of symptoms of which you should always be aware of as a dog owner. Keep an eye on your dogs health in much the same way you would do so for your own child and you will be well on your way to a long and lasting relationship with your own dog. Your dogs health is important so watch for any symptoms your dog may exhibit closely and be ready to act on them as necessary.
